USA EPA REGULATORY ANNOUNCEMENT
FOR NON-ROAD ENGINES
The USA EPA has now
finalised the next generation of emission standards for new non-road
spark ignition engines, equipment and vessels, including the introduction
of evaporative emissions standards for equipment and vessels using
these engines.
For small nonroad utility engines (<19 kW),
EPA are adopting HC+NOx standards of 10 gm/kW hr for Class 1 (<225
cc) engines and 8 gm/kW hr for Class II (>225cc) engines, starting
in the 2011 model year. These standards are the equivalent of the
California Air Resource Board Phase 3 emissions introduced this
year in California.
For both hand held and non-hand held engines,
evaporative emission standards are being introduced to control fuel
tank and line permeation and diffusion emissions.
EPA state that when fully implemented, the
new standards will result in a 35% reduction in HC+NOx from new
engine's exhaust.
For outboards and PWC (Personal Water Craft)
the emission standards to be implemented for model year 2010 will
be the equivalent of the recently introduced California Air Resource
Board "3 Star" emission, with the addition of a CO emission
limit of 300 gm/kW hr. The new standards represent a reduction in
HC+NOx emissions of over 70% compared to the existing USA standards,
and 92% compared to the 1996 era outboards.
Orbital's direct injection system allows 2
stroke direct injection products to meet this very stringent emission
standard.
For sterndrive/inboard engines, for model
year 2010, the HC+NOx will be set at 5 gm/kW hr, similar to the
CARB 4 star emissions introduced this year.
