OMNIVORE ENGINE DISPLAYED AT
GENEVA MOTOR SHOW
The OMNIVORE concept
engine built by Lotus and using the Orbital FlexDI direct
injection fuel systems has been displayed at the prestigious Geneva
Motorshow held this week.
The OMNIVORE program, led by Lotus and with
collaboration by Queen's University Belfast and Orbital Corporation
is aimed at the engine for the future, offering significantly improved
fuel efficiency across a wide range of sustainable bio-fuels.
The engine, using innovative variable compression
and a 2-stroke operating cycle with direct in-cylinder injection,
will be well suited to optimised multi-fuel operation.
Orbital's FlexDI
system is ideally suited for the OMNIVORE engine program. The very
fine fuel droplet characteristics of the air-assisted direct injection
system lends itself well to a wide range of fuels including the
higher alcohol level fuels where superior fuel preparation is critical
for cold start and cold engine operation. The characteristics of
the system also support advanced efficient combustion techniques
such as Controlled Auto Ignition (CAI).
